Heritage

History buffs will want to recall early Texas pioneer days at the 1867 Charles S. Cock House and the 19th century Merriman Cabin; stroll around our beautifully restored 1909 Hays County Courthouse; and visit the LBJ Museum to walk in the steps of our 36th president’s early years as a student at Texas State University, and then a young public school teacher in South Texas.

The Hays County Veterans Memorial offers a year-round opportunity to remember our local heroes. Our Veterans Memorial is located in a place of honor on one of the main streets leading into the Heart of San Marcos.

And if you are interested in cemeteries, we have several beautiful cemeteries steeped in local history, all located in park-like settings.

To learn more about the history of Hays county, visit the Hays County Historical Commission website. There you can view photos, research historical sites, and purchase educational media.
