Louie's Oyster House & Beer Garden
Downtown San Marcos is undergoing some incredible changes these days. Streets are being repaved, walkways rejuvenated, and the local business scene is seeing a boom in the number of places to dine or hangout with friends. Louie's Oyster House & Beer Garden at 119 E. Hutchison is just one example of the unique additions coming to the downtown business community. The following is an excerpt from food blog Slow Down & Savor's review of this brand new seafood eatery and bar.
I didn't know what to expect at all when we walked passed the outdoor seating areas and through the entrance and into the small interior space where a long bar with 100 different draught beers on tap and a couple of tables.
Most of the seating is outdoors, but with the extreme heat that we've been experiencing here, we opted for the indoors.
After ogling over the place, Michael and I went up to the front counter where menus are available to scan before ordering.
The two of us decided to go with the crab stuffed jalapeño appetizer and a full order of 12 market Gulf oysters on the half shell. After ordering at the register, we each selected a beer from the huge selection they have, and we took our seats.
While we waited, I went to see what was going on outside. There was some really good live music, kids playing washers and horseshoes, there was a beer shack, and on the other side, the outdoor bar was packed with people enjoying what looked to be really awesome food and some cold beer.
My favorite part, however, was watching a man shucking the oysters for our order. Neat!
Only a few minutes after I got back to the table, our big plate of oysters and our fried crab stuffed jalapeños arrived. Yay!
They were cold, plump, juicy and fresh, and with the perfect combo of fresh squeezed lemon, pungent horseradish and mouth-watering cocktail sauce, we were in business.
Michael and I made short order of our oysters, loving each spicy, sweet and briny bite. I loved our oysters.
The fried crab stuffed jalapeños were also really awesome. They were crisp and crunchy, and full of flavor. The jalapeños themselves were fresh, and had a nice bite, and the crab was a perfect compliment. I'd never had crab stuffed jalapeños before, but I have to say, I'm into it.
After we finished our food, we were able to really turn our attention to the atmosphere, which really was great: super relaxed, and inviting. The bartender we had was really knowledgeable, and gave us some great suggestions from their never-ending tap selection.
All in all, we had a great experience, and plan on getting back there again soon! Next time, I think I'll try either the oyster roll or the shrimp basket. Yum, yum! Have you had the chance to get out to Louie's? What'd you think?
