San Marcos has fun filled events all year long. This is a short list of annual events but there are a lot more that can be found on our Events Calendar. Make plans now to visit often!

ALL YEAR

Farmer’s Market - Saturdays & Tuesdays

San Marcos Farmer’s Market provides an outlet for Central Texas farmers to market their crops and a source of fresh, homegrown and homemade products.

SATURDAY: Downtown Square on San Antonio St. • 9am-1pm 

TUESDAY: CM Allen Pkwy at Hopkins St. behind The Hitch: A Mobile Eatery • 3-6pm

 

Summer in the Park - Thursdays all Summer

Enjoy free live music in the park each Thursday evening. Bring your chairs or blankets, refreshments and sit under the stars. Opening act and headliner list can be found on the website each year.

Art Squared Art Market - 2nd Saturdays in March-December

Enjoy an outdoor market featuring art of all types including painting, sculpture, pottery, jewelry and live music. More than 30 artist showcase and sell their works on the shaded courthouse lawn.

Cruise-In Night - 3rd Saturdays

On the third Saturday of every month, bring your classic, antique, muscle or unique car or bike to Dick’s Classic Garage for a fun filled evening of classic cars, live music and local eats. Free museum admission after 5pm.

Unicycle Football - Sundays in August-May

Unicycle Football is full-on American football played entirely on unicycles. The Unicycle Football League currently has eight teams that play every Sunday during the 56-game season. The game has a lot of quirks and peculiarities that can’t be appropriately described in words and must be experienced first hand.

JANUARY

January 16 • Spring Lake Trail Run 10 mile & 5K

San Marcos’ trail race on the beautiful Spring Lake Trails. This is a USATF sanctioned event. The 10-mile course leads runners through a rather porous section of the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone with some difficult technical sections of trail. The 5K course is rigorous with a medium technical rating and is a good introduction to trail running.

FEBRUARY

February 5-6 • Eddie Durham Jazz Celebration and Hill Country Jazz Festival

Celebrate Texas jazz legend and San Marcos native Eddie Durham with a program of live jazz performances that pay tribute to the renowned Texas guitarist.

March

March 6 • Moe’s Better Half Marathon

This is the oldest half marathon in Texas. Over the last 31 years, Moe’s Better Half Marathon has evolved into one of the more popular road races in central Texas and is known for its challenging and scenic course and often colorful race management.

APRIL

Thursdays all Month - Spring Concert Series

April 1-3 • Swing on the Square

This weekend long event honors Texas Western Swing Music and the pioneers who started this great sound and helped it develop over the years. The festival features Western Swing acts, and a variety of other styles of music that are the roots of western swing, including blues, 40’s jazz, big band swing and country. Enjoy Brew Bop, a micro brew tasting tour on Friday, then live music and dance contest on Saturday and gospel brunch on Sunday.

April 2 • Youthfest

Family festival includes live entertainment all day, art activities, face painting and free games. Additional activities include an inflatable jump castle and train rides, the Fire Department’s fire safety house, and the Animal Shelter will share their animals to hug.

April 16 • Mutt Strutt

This 1-mile dog walk and pet fair includes dog races, pet contests, arts and crafts, food and prizes. Dogs must be on a leash. Proceeds benefit San Marcos Animal Shelter.

April 29-30 • MR Fest

Conceived as a one-day music event in 2008, MR Fest has since grown into an annual, weekend-long showcase of local music, art and comedy hosted at numerous venues in and around downtown San Marcos.

April 28-30 • Feria del Mariachi

Latin Music Studies at Texas State University brings you this annual mariachi music festival featuring competitions, workshops and concert performances.

MAY

May 6-7 • Wine & Art Weekend

A three-day experience in local fare, wine and the best art in the region. Wine walkers can enjoy wine Friday night, Saturday will have Art Squared showcases the best of local art. The annual Heritage Home Tour on Saturday and Sunday will feature unique history and character of San Marcos. Kid’s crafts, live art demos and entertainment will round out the weekend.

May 7-8 • Heritage Home Tours/Tours of Distinction

Enjoy this two-day event featuring self-guided tours of some of San Marcos’ historic homes and culturally significant sites. This is the only weekend these homes are open for tours.

Dirt Dauber Festival

Partake in a wonderful celebration of all things clay at the Eye of the Dog Art Center. This free event features clay art demonstrations, refreshments, a kids’ clay play table and live music. What’s not to like?

JUNE 

June 11 • Texas Water Safari

Billed as the “World’s Toughest Boat Race,” the Texas Water Safari is a 260-mile long canoe and kayak race from Spring Lake in San Marcos to the city of Seadrift on the Texas coastline. Come cheer the teams on at our riverside parks.

Juneteenth Celebrations

This is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Festivities regularly include a parade through downtown San Marcos and a charity BBQ cook-off.

June 24-26 • BIGfest

BIGfest is a three-day music festival at Cheatham Street Warehouse celebrating the birthday of Texas legend and guitar virtuoso Big John Mills. Proceeds benefit the Cheatham Street Music Foundation.

JULY

July 4 • SummerFest

Come out to San Marcos Plaza Park for the city’s annual 4th of July celebration featuring live music, children’s parade, a patriotic costume contest, food vendors and a grand finale fireworks display.

July 16  Bodacious Burger Cook-Off

September 17 • Junior Texas Water Safari

This 16-mile water adventure provides a great opportunity for canoeists and kayakers to test their skills, gain experience in the water and prepare for the big Texas Water Safari next summer in June.

Mermaid Week SMTX

Mermaid Week SMTX is planned to be an all-inclusive city wide celebration of San Marcos’ art, heritage and river culture with major emphasis on environmental awareness. Mermaid Week highlights the mermaid as a symbol of guardianship for our river with mermaid themed activity throughout our city. Three primary events will make up the inaugural event scheduled for September 2016 which will include, The Mermaid Ball, The Downtown Mermaid Parade and culminate with The Mermaid Splash -- a river, music, environmental awareness and arts festival.

OCTOBER

October 8 • Sacred Springs Powwow

The Sacred Springs Powwow is an annual celebration of the Native American culture that has been part of the San Marcos area for thousands of years. Native dancers from across Texas gather at the Sacred Springs in San Marcos dressed in beautiful, hand-crafted regalia. Come watch the dancers, participate in the intertribal dances, and enjoy the booths that offer authentic Native American arts and food.

October 8 • PetFest

November 5 • Veterans Day Parade

November 11-12 • Wine & Wassail Walk Weekend

This third-annual wine and shopping event kicks off the holiday season downtown with festive flair. The San Marcos Farmer’s Market will host a Farm to Table dinner that will provide local produce, wine and a sundry of goods to downtown eateries to be transformed into a gourmet-style meal.

November 12 • CAF Veterans Dinner & 40’s Swing Band Hangar Dance

Celebrate and remember the brave men and women who gave us our freedom at the Commemorative Air Force Central Texas Wing in San Marcos. Enjoy an authentic ‘40s style swing dance surrounded by a number of restored and functional WWII aircraft.
