7 Affordable Family Fun Ways to Enjoy Spring Break at Spring Lake

Don’t let your Spring Break slip away from you this year- spend it at The Meadows Center! The Meadows Center has plenty of fun events and activities lined up that will make you and your family’s Spring Break memorable without breaking the bank.


Glass-Bottom Boat Tours

One of our most popular attractions at The Meadows Center is our glass-bottom boat tours! Since 1945, these historic boats have given people of all ages an in-depth look at the natural beauty of Spring Lake. You’ll get to view hundreds of artesian springs that bubble up to form Spring Lake, learn about the unique history of The Meadows Center, observe the unique ecosystem and learn how to protect and preserve it. Our fantastic boat drivers are well trained and will be able to answer any questions you have!

Classic Boat Tour Prices (30 min) – Daily

  • Children (3-12): $6.00
  • Adults: $9.75
  • Senior (65+): $8.00

Extended Boat Tour Prices (45 min) - Weekends Only (offered daily during Spring Break)

Add to your experience and explore springs not seen on the 30-minute tour. 

  • Children (3-12): $8.00
  • Adults: $13.25
  • Seniors (65+): $11.00

Discounts are offered to students, faculty and staff of Texas State University and military. Children 2 and under are free. No reservation is required for groups with 15 people or less.

 

Wetlands Tours

Spring Lake has its own newly restored Wetlands Boardwalk that is perfect for a sunny Spring Break stroll! The Wetlands Boardwalk is free for all visitors and provides an up-close view of the exotic species that thrive here. Visitors can also purchase a Guided Wetlands Tour. Our friendly staff and environmental interpreters will be glad to tell you all about the ecological benefits the wetlands provide for Spring Lake. 

Guided Wetlands Tour Upgrade Prices (25 min) – Weekends Only (offered daily during Spring Break)

  • Children (3-12): $2.00
  • Adults: $3.50
  • Seniors (65+): $3.00

Children 2 and under are free. No reservation is required for groups with 15 people or less.

 

Discovery Hall Tours

The Discovery Hall is full of fun, interactive exhibits and hands-on activities. It features a 1,000-gallon aquarium where you can see all the different kinds of fish that call Spring Lake home. The endangered species exhibit gives you a personal view of our small blind friends, the Texas Blind Salamanders. Plus, it’s air conditioned to beat that warm spring heat! The Discovery Hall is free for all visitors and we also offer guided tours:

Go Green! Family Fun Day on March 16

Family Fun Days are held at The Meadows Center on select Saturdays throughout the year. Join us Saturday, March 16 as we celebrate World Water Day at the Go Green! World Water Family Fun Day from 11am to 3pm to learn about our most valuable resource, water, and how to protect it. Everyone will have fun at this free, family-fun event with our nature and holiday themed activities, crafts and more! 

Spring Lake Trails Preserve

Along with your visit to The Meadows Center, you can enjoy the beauty of the Spring Lake Natural Preserve, which is located right above Spring Lake. The Preserve is a little over 250 acres and is the second largest natural area in San Marcos. It has plenty of trails and open surface that’s great for hikes, biking and sightseeing the impressive views of the Hill Country. This area is home to many of San Marcos’ plant and animal wildlife so we ask everyone to follow these Park and Recreational Rules & Guidelines.

REI Kayaking Tours

REI will be hosting several super fun and adventurous paddling activities at The Meadows Center just in time for Spring Break! 

Sunset Kayaking Tour

Experience an exclusive, cool evening view of the sunset over the Edwards Aquifer while

kayaking on top of The Meadows Center’s Spring Lake. On this tour you’ll get the opportunity to learn about Spring Lake’s unique and sensitive environment. 

  • March 17 & 24, 6:30-8 p.m.

$39 Member / $45 Non-member

Spotlight the Springs

After the San Marcos sun sets over the crystal-clear waters of Spring Lake, you’ll get to create your very own underwater spotlight show! Explore nocturnal wildlife and the hundreds of springs along the bottom of the lake.  

  • March 17 & 21, 7:30-9p.m.

$44 Member / $50 Non-member

Essential Kayaking Skills

Build your skills and learn the basics of kayak paddling and kayak rescue demonstrations while on this tour.

  • March 20 & 24, 4:30-6:30p.m. 

$65 Member / $85 Non-member

Full Moon Kayak Tour

Following the relaxing sunset, witness the full moon and its glowing reflection on the Spring Lake water. 

  • March 20, 7:30-9p.m.

$55 Member / $65 Non-member 

All tours provide basic on-water instructions. Minimum age for participation varies. All equipment is provided by REI. Visit the REI Co Op website at www.REISpringLake.com for registration and more information. 

 

Day of Fun: Explore San Marcos!  

The Meadows Center and the City of San Marcos are surrounded by plenty of fun family stops. Spend your morning at The Meadows with a picnic near Spring Lake. Afterwards, explore the San Marcos River and Wonder World Cave & Park. A number of 13 parks and more surround the San Marcos River which include Plaza Park, Skate Park, Dog Park and Children’s Park!
