MLK Day in San Marcos, Texas
Whether you observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day on your own or via virtual celebrations, with art or time of reflection, we have some ideas for how you can honor and recognize the holiday.
Visit the Crossroads Memorial and Diversity Mural
The LBJ MLK Crossroads Memorial celebrates and honors the historic efforts of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and President Lyndon Baines Johnson in forging the most significant civil rights legislation since the Civil War. The monument is located at the crossroads of MLK Drive and LBJ Drive, the only American intersection bearing the names of both of these leaders.
Local artist, Robert Jones, has created a new mural located on a prominent brick wall of the Crossroads Building (110 E. MLK Drive). The piece celebrates all of the cultures that make San Marcos an inclusive and welcoming community. The dedication will be streamed live on Facebook on January 16, 2021, at 10am.
Honor from Home
The Dunbar Heritage Association will host a virtual MLK Celebration that features guest speakers, music and reflections on Dr. King’s dream. The 2021 celebration’s theme “From Collective Chaos to Common-Unity” is an ideology inspired by Dr. King’s work and is focused on promoting community, collaboration and civility.
The San Marcos Public Library has created a “Take and Make Craft” for you to make at home. The craft is appropriate for all ages. Supplies can be picked up at the San Marcos Public Library, or you can use your own supplies and follow the instructions found HERE.

Take some time to reflect
We recommend taking some time to relax and reflect on the achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the significant impact he had on the country. This is a great time to hit the trails, go for a leisurely walk, dip a paddle in the San Marcos River or just find a quiet place to sit for a while.
